Horizons Progress Update 1

After a little bit without updates, I think it's time to share a bit more about how Horizons is progressing. As per usual, I'm going to format this in a few questions.

  • How far along are you now?
  • Are there any large changes with the album?
  • Can you share what these songs will feature in comparison to earlier tracks?

Question 1: How far along are you now?

I've made a little bit of progress. As you know, Awakening is completed, but what you don't know is that I'm most of the way through Barren. I also have bases for a couple of other songs on the album, including Hope and Onward. I don't want to rush the album like I have previous releases.

Question 2: Are there any large changes with the album?

Yes. I've decided to cut a song, specifically Crossing, as it is stressing a similar part of the plot as Onward will. However, in consideration, I felt Onward emphasized the feelings I am aiming to represent more accurately than Crossing does.

Another couple of things I'm "changing" (rather, adding to) is the plot of the album. If you don't know, Horizons features a mysterious traveler waking up on an unknown planet and seeking hope in the form of a lighthouse. However, I've continued to think up new details that can be translated into melodies. While these details range from rather large to very small, I'm not planning on revealing the large twist I've come up with for the end of the album.

However, I will drop some hints. First of all, when the traveler awakens, he knows where he is. He remembers his journey and recalls everything he has done. The traveler keeps his recollection of waking up every time before this.

That's it, no more. Anyways, on to the next question!

Question 3: Can you share what these songs will feature in comparison to earlier tracks?

One thing I've learned over the past month or two is that sound effects are really good at conveying an environment if you don't have any other way to do it. As you heard in Awakening, the rumble of the environment fading in around our traveler sets the perfect tone for sharing what he's hearing as he wakes up. This rumbling will carry over into Barren, which also features sounds of wind and crumbling rocks in order to further evoke the image of his surroundings.

The other thing I'm learning is the various effects FL Studio features, and I've even spent a bit of extra money on upgrading my version in order to unlock the other synths and effects that FL features. These effects have been featured in previous songs, but FL Studio offers much more powerful options in comparison to Soundtrap's offerings.
